Student use of blogs and wikis

I truly appreciate the time students have taken to publish comments on this blog.  Now that the school year is underway, I am interested in any comments you have especially if you are involved in a class that has used blogs and/or wikis.  Do you like it as another form of learning?  Do you think you learn the information better by being “in charge” of your own learning?  Would you like more teachers/courses to use blogs/wikis as an instructional strategy?  Give me your thoughts.

I would prefer you cancel spring break over winter break. I have a friend from Oregon who has a break at the same time and is buying tickets to fly out and visit. It would be extremely inconvenient for this break to be canceled.

There has been no decision as to which break if any would be cancelled. It all depends upon how many days we need to make up. Many have asked why we can’t cancel the staff development days to make up days. These days are already included in our 180 day minimum and we generate the necessary state aid. We need to add days to the calendar IN ADDITION to those days. There is a possibility of using some of the legal holidays such as Martin Luther King Day. There are a few such holidays where it is permissable to have school. I will investigate all possibilities and I know how passionate students, teachers and families feel about vacations.

We used 4 days for the storm. Three were snow days IF NEEDED but did lose 4 student calendar days. We need to make up the 4 days. To assume we would not have at least one snow day this year is unrealistic and puts our state aid in jeopardy.

I have had many calls and e-mails about making up the time. Many people already have plans for both vacations- to disrupt 2 vacations does not make sense. I do understand that people could use a some form of a break. That is why I will recommend keeping President’s Day for a long weekend and having school for the rest of the Februaru Break.

Lastly, if we were to run out of days, April is late to be making them up. If there were not enough days in the April break to make up our lost days, we would lose state aid. The Commissioner of Education will not provide a waiver when we had plenty of notice to have used the February break. For each day we lose aid, our district loses almost $3,000.

The reason we cannot make up days at the end of the year is because there are rules/laws related to attendance and state aid. For grades 7-12, you cannot make up any days after the start of the first Regents which is June 14th this year.
